Affinity Electric’s team of commercial electricians recently provided electrical services for a complete tenant finish for a new dental office for Heartland Dental in Johnston, Colorado.  This project included: wiring and installing lighting, lighting controls, special medical outlets and wiring, installing new electrical service, 2 new circuit panels and wiring in power to dental chairs and X-ray equipment.

This project took about 5 months working hand-in-hand with other contractors and the general contractor.
One interesting thing when providing electrical services in a dental or medical facility is that you have to use special “health care grade” wiring and outlets.

What is a Tenant Finish for an Electrician?

A tenant finish (or tenant improvement) for an electrical contractor refers to the process of modifying or customizing the electrical systems within a leased commercial or residential space to meet the specific needs of the tenant. Affinity Electric are experts at this type of work. A tenant finish typically occurs when a business moves into a new space or renovates an existing one, requiring adjustments to the electrical infrastructure to accommodate the tenant’s operational requirements.

Health care-grade wiring and outlets are specialized electrical components designed to meet the strict safety and reliability standards required in healthcare environments such as hospitals, clinics, and dental or medical offices. These components are critical for ensuring patient safety, maintaining power to life-supporting medical equipment, and preventing electrical hazards in sensitive areas.

Benefits of Health Care-Grade Wiring and Outlets:

  • Improved Safety: The enhanced grounding and durability of health care-grade components reduce the risk of electrical shock or fire, critical in a medical setting.
  • Power Reliability: These components are designed to ensure uninterrupted power, even during outages, maintaining the operation of life-saving equipment.
  • Prevention of Interference: Shielded wiring and isolated grounding systems prevent electrical noise, ensuring that sensitive medical devices can operate without disruption.

By adhering to these strict standards, health care-grade wiring and outlets help ensure the safety of patients, staff, and equipment in a dental office or any healthcare environment.

X-ray Rooms

Affinity Electric installed the wiring not only for the offices, hallway and dental chairs but also for the X-ray imaging rooms. We had to take special care so that the electrical wiring is shielded from causing interference with sensitive imaging equipment, and outlets  support higher voltages for specialized devices.

Regulatory Standards

When installing electrical services into any dental office or health care facility we have to  follow very specific regulatory standards including:

  • NEC (National Electrical Code): Health care facilities must follow NEC Article 517, which outlines the specific electrical requirements for healthcare environments. This includes the type of wiring, grounding, and installation methods suitable for patient care areas.
  • UL (Underwriters Laboratories): Hospital-grade outlets are UL-listed and must meet specific performance tests for hospital use, including grounding, retention, and durability under frequent use.
  • NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities Code): This code sets guidelines for electrical systems in health care facilities, ensuring that power delivery systems maintain high reliability and protect patients from electrical hazards.
